It's hard to believe these pictures were taken just over a month ago.
Doug's (maternal) grandfather passed away on March 20 at the age of 95.
At the end of February, Doug's Grandpa Frank was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, he needed a necessary medical procedure in order to make the rest of his life a bit more comfortable. Any sort of medical procedure involving a 95 year old person is very risky.
When we heard the news of Grandpa's cancer and the impending procedure, Doug, Bri and I jumped on a plane on March 1 (Bri missed a couple of days of school) in order to see him before any procedure was done. We knew that Grandpa wanted to see Bri so badly ~ he hadn't seen her since she was 3 years old.
We didn't know what to expect when got there. When we walked in the door of Doug's grandparents' apartment (assisted living), Grandpa Frank looked like the picture of health. He was more frail than the last time we saw him, but he seemed so vibrant for a 95 year old person.
We took a number of pictures during our visit because we wanted to remember him smiling and looking well...

Less than 3 weeks later, while grandpa was at the hospital preparing for his procedure, he had a heart attack. The stress of the whole situation was just too much for him to handle. Several days after his heart attack, he passed away.
We are so grateful we went to see him (and Grandma Anne) when we did. I missed seeing my grandmother (Bubbie) before she passed several years ago and I still regret it. I didn't want that for Doug.
I will blog about our trip to Michigan in my next post because it was a very special visit (and a bit eventful because of the snow!).
