First, let me thank all of you that commented on my last post. A few of you sent e-mails too. Your outpouring of love and support truly overwhelms me. All the great advice from the "been there, done that" moms is so helpful and is exactly what I need to know. Thank you, thank you.
I spoke with my mom last night and told her about Briana issues. She mentioned in passing if I thought the problem might be Briana's ears. Bri had not really been tugging on her ears at all, so I really didn't think that was it. I put Briana to bed around 8:30PM and prayed she would sleep all night.
1:30AM - Briana wakes up screaming. Ok, I know something is really up here. I calmed her down and asked her if she would like a little milk. I asked Doug to grab some for me. I started to rock her and then I asked her if her ears hurt. She pointed to her left ear and said "hurt". Oh no. I gave her some milk to drink and rocked her for about 30 minutes. I put her in her crib and decided to look at the computer for what time the urgent care center opened up near my house in the morning - 11AM on a Sunday. I could hear Briana tossing and turning on the baby monitor. Then she started to talk to herself. I guess she just couldn't get back to sleep. I went back in her room and rocked her for another 30-40 minutes. While we are rocking, she points to her ear unprompted this time and wimpers "ears". Finally, an answer - I think. When she was just about to fall asleep and I placed her in her crib. By the time everything was all said and done, it was 4AM. Ugh...
Briana slept in until 9:45 because she was up so much during the night. Of course she woke up happy as a clam, unlike any of the past 5 days. Doug and I took her to the urgent care center and found out that she does have a nasty ear infection in her left ear. Ta-da!
On top of that, I do believe that Briana might be going through a growth spurt. That was suggested by both Tonggu Momma and Jari. I think they may be right. Briana has been eating like crazy the last few days. A bottomless pit. I can tell you that growth spurts and ear infections don't mix. At all.
I'm tired, but I am happy to have an answer. Thanks once again for all the kind words. I hope you all know what it means to me.
24 Kind Words:
Glad to hear that you found out what was going on..
She will feel better soon with the meds...
Hugs girly..
I bet you are relaxing today..
Have a Great Week..
Sorry Bri's sick - sounds like you're having a tough time, but have received some great advice.
When Hannah had her first major tantrum, I was so shocked! Now I understand why people question if their kids behaviour is normal!!
Any chance that Briana's had several ear infections and this is impairing her speech development?
Best wishes and hope she's feeling better soon, and you get a peaceful nights sleep :)
Oh, poor little mite. The Tongginator never complains about her ears until it's really terrible. Once, the dcotor gave her Codeine on the spot because he said it was TERRIBLE and obviously immensely painful. Yet, the night before, she was running around, with no fever, giggling and playing with her cousins.
Hang in there. And remember... angels sometimes become Tongginators. But then they return to angelic status once again. Sometimes it takes years though. LOL.
Hi Lisa,
Happy New Year....I am just catching up after being gone and not looking at blogs for days....I am so glad that you figured out the problem....the ears make total sense....those infections are horrible, I had a really bad one last year and cannot imagine a little one having to go through that!! Hope the medicine kicks in real soon and she is back to her good old self again!!
Hope you have a better week...and try to get some rest:)
Lisa
I'm so glad you have a handle on what is wrong with Briana. It is so hard when our little ones aren't yet old enough to clearly communicate what they are feeling and what they need.
I also think it is wise that you are following your own intuition and getting her speech evaluated. I'm sure they will check her hearing, too...as even mild hearing loss can complicate speech acquisition.
I hope Briana gets to feeling better soon...
oh how stressful!! I like Similisan drops for ears, and Hylands makes an earache tablet. I like to use them while waiting on the Motrin to kick in. (they're oral) I haven't treated their ear aches with antibiotics though.
And I read once, I think it was from Martha Sears, using an ice cube tray, and filling each thing with different snacks. Mini-buffet if you will. And leaving it where the child can access it safely along with a cup of water.
It works really well for when they are hungry but aren't into eating a meal or a snack. Grazing works great!!
Hope she feels better sooon and thanks for the well wishes by the way
Oh,......poor baby and Momma....hope the meds help and you get some much needed rest too.
Hugs,
Steffie
Oh, I've missed a lot. I hope your girl is feeling better quickly.
Poor munchkin. Hope she feels better soon.
Donna
Oh - poor sweetie - I bet it has really been hurting her. :( I am glad you seemed to have figured this out, though.
We drove home from NY this weekend and I have not been on the computer in a few days. I am so sorry to hear that Bri is not feeling well. I had this with Ben one time. He had a terrible ear infection and I did not realize he was sick. I felt horrible. I hope life returns to normal now. Good for you for being proactive and getting the speech checked out.
Glad you were able to get answers to Bri's behavior! Hope the meds work super fast and Bri (and momma) have restful nights soon.
Hi there.....question for you.....does B have a lot of wax in her ears? I had Sophia's cleaned out and when we walked outside the expression on her face was incredible.....AND her language took off in 24 hours......so you might want to consider that as well.....have them scrap some of the scaly wax out and she might hear things a little bit clearer. ;)
Just my Momma experience!
Hugs,
Steffie
I thought about that as I was going to bed last night....funny how my blogger buds are always on my mind.....lol
