After we spent several hours viewing the falls, we headed to the quaint, nearby town of Dahlonega. They have the cutest shops and lots of little restaurants. It is a lovely town...
All over the town, there are handmade statues...
My pretty girl...
After a little shopping, we sat down to rest and for a photo opp...
We ate at this restaurant...
Doug being Doug (LOL!)...
After eating and shopping, Doug drove us over to the Consolidated Gold Mine to go on a mine tour...
Daddy and Briana waiting for the tour to start...
An announcement came over the loud speaker that "Precious" was going to be our tour guide. Below is "Precious" - LOL!
When he came out the door to get the tour group, he said to us "Not really what you expected, huh?" and we started laughing. I am assuming this is a joke nickname, but it was pretty funny to see him come around the corner. He was a great guide.
We started into the mine and Bri huffed at me about something. Don't even remember why now...
It was really something to go down into that mine...
Precious explained how men got very sick down in that mine breathing in dust and some went deaf using the drills trying to extract gold...
And then he disclosed that there were little bats down in the mine - ack!
After the tour, we could pan gold ourselves...
Between Doug, Bri and I, we only got a few flakes of gold...
The man in the overalls did a trick with Briana and pulled a small "rock/gem" out of her ear. She thought that was cool. ;)
Bri also did some gem panning...
I didn't realize how much I would enjoy learning about the mine. It was quite amazing to see the conditions that the men back then had to work in. Currently, they have electricity/lighting in the mine for the tour. Precious turned out the lights and lit a lighter to show us how dark it really was when the men were drilling in there. Pretty scary.
After a busy day, we headed back to the lodge and had dinner. Doug and Bri went out for a walk after dinner. It got a bit chilly, so when they got back lodge, Doug bought Bri a hot chocolate and they sat in front of the fireplace in the lobby. Sitting there on the couch, Bri told Doug "I love fall break." ;)
Next day - Babyland General Hospital and Helen, GA!
