May - The Lead Up To Graduation

May 1st was the day all the parents in our neighborhood could start placing signs in our yards to celebrate our kids. Of course, these two signs went in front of my house on that day. LOL!

Our neighborhood also allows signs for the month of May in the front of our neighborhood entrances (I live in a BIG neighborhood with a number of different sections.) There was a man/neighbor in our neighborhood who offered to purchase signs if someone in each section could spread the word, organize the people interested in their section and collect the money. I just knew if I didn't do it, no one else in my section would. I really didn't want to do it. I waited for a little while to see what would happen and then I just decided that I needed to be the point person. So, I helped the man/neighbor get the design put together for our section's sign, collected the names and the money and he ordered the sign. I didn't realize he wasn't going to install the sign though. Ugh. So on May 1st, Doug and I installed the sign ourselves. I think we did pretty well despite being amateurs...

After being out in the elements for several weeks, the sign has gotten a bit droopy. We will take it down on June 1st. It has been really great seeing Briana's name on that sign!

Our neighborhood gazette also listed the names of the neighborhood graduates as well...

At the very end of April, Briana's dramatic writing teacher asked her a question. He explained to her that he and a friend had been dining at a restaurant and saw an interesting painting. He took a picture of the painting and asked Briana if she could recreate the picture so he could give it to his friend as a fun gift. He offered to pay her - so he commissioned B to paint him a picture! It took her a little while to complete it, but she did an amazing job! Her teacher was very pleased.

On May 7th, Briana had her Senior Awards Night. We knew that Briana would be receiving her graduation stoles and cords for Beta Club, National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society and End of Pathway completion for culinary. What we didn't know is that she would also receive an award for Printmaking (which she took first semester) and an award for Culinary Student of the Year! Those were some great surprises!

I sent out Briana's graduation announcements and she has been receiving some lovely cards and monetary gifts - which we are very appreciative of (thank yous going out soon!). This is how she looks pretty much every time she opens a card...

On Mother's Day, Doug and I gave Briana an early graduation gift. Since she was in kindergarten, I have been collecting signatures and heartfelt messages from Briana's school teachers and putting them in the book "Oh The Places You'll Go" by Dr. Suess. I wasn't sure how Briana would react when she received it, but as soon as she read the note that I attached to the book (including a list of all the teachers who contributed), she started to really cry. Briana doesn't always show big emotions outwardly, but she did that afternoon. It showed Doug and me how much the gift touched her and that meant so much to us. It was a perfect, touching moment...

The messages were so heartfelt and wonderful. Her teachers all really loved her and that meant a lot.

We decided to give her the gift early because she was starting to stress a little about getting her teachers to sign her yearbook at the end of the school year. She had no idea I already had so many beautiful teacher messages just waiting for her!

Finally the last day of school arrived...

All her last day of school pictures...

The last day of school was college/career T-shirt day and it was supposed to be the senior outdoor picnic. But it rained. And the school had no indoor backup plan. So, no picnic or real opportunity for the seniors to hang out and get their yearbooks signed. It was very irritating, but everything else senior event-related worked out, so I am going to let it go.

Bri did get a couple pics with friends. These are her culinary friends/classmates...

Bri and her friend Parker in Zoology (they have been friends since elementary school)...

They did this project together for Zoology (yes - they chose Bluey!). They did the research together, but of course, Bri was the artist on this one...

Briana received her yearbook on the last day of school. It is surreal to see her in there as a senior...

A few days before graduation, Briana's former elementary school hosted a senior walk. It was so surreal and emotional seeing her walk those halls one last time...

I invited my parents to come see her walk too...

A cub waiting at the entrance of the school...

Briana with her garb...

Briana and Meredith walking to the media center...

It's walk time...

Briana walking those halls years ago (sniff)...

Briana and Meredith have grown into beautiful young ladies (on the left they were in 2nd grade)...

The elementary school graduates!!

With a class of 734 graduates (you read that right), it took three days for the kids to practice for graduation. The graduation was taking place outside, so two of the three days was located in the stadium. Bri said those days were warm, and we were glad graduation was taking place at night...

Briana received her honor medal on day two of grad practice...

Then graduation day finally arrived...

And I will write all about the graduation in my next post!!

She Did It!!!

My girl is a high school graduate!!

I have so much to blog about regarding the month of May - all the events leading up to Briana's graduation and Briana's actual graduation.

Before I do that, I just have to share how proud I am of this girl. She started 9th grade in the middle of the pandemic and she learned virtually throughout that whole school year. She "actually" started traditional high school in 10th grade and had to catch up socially in a brand new school (luckily she was fine academically).

Bri is an introvert and doesn't really like being in large groups, so being in a school of 3000+ kids and over 700 kids in her grade alone, was challenging. Not only did she rise to the challenge, she conquered it. She made friends. She made straight As. She joined clubs. She completed her volunteer hours. She is definitely resilient.

Because Briana doesn't love big groups or large crowds, she was a "definite no" when it came to having/throwing a graduation party for herself. Instead of having a party, we are having several small intimate dinners with family and close friends. That is how she wants it. I told her I would do whatever she wants to do - it's her decision and her celebration.

All my friends warned me what a whirlwind senior year was going to be (especially at the end) and boy were they right. I am more than happy to decompress now for a few months before we get thrown into the chaos of college.

I'm going to miss B so much when she goes off to school though. She will be close luckily, but she won't be with me every day. It will be an adjustment for sure.

So I'll be back soon with senior/graduation related posts and also my recap of NYC.

Woo Hoo!!! She did it!

High School Graduation Tomorrow

Tomorrow. My baby girl is graduating tomorrow.

How is this happening?

It's difficult not to think about our very first scary, overwhelming and emotional moments with her...

But then we beam when we see how far she has come from those first difficult moments...

She is one of the strongest and bravest girls I know.

Doug and I somehow raised a whole human being who has grown wings and will fly off in September to her new college adventure. I'm not at all ready to let her go, but I know I have to. Check in on me every so often in September - it might take a little time for me to be ok again.

Happy Graduation to my sweet Bri.

She makes me SOOO very proud.

27th Wedding Anniversary, Cinco De Mayo And Mother's Day

****************************

May is always a busy month for our family and it is filled with occasions - Doug's and my wedding anniversary, Mother's Day, end of the school year festivities, Memorial Day. This year is no different - except we are now adding in the hoopla of a high school graduation!

***************************

On May 3rd, Doug and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary. Doug had to work that day, so we had a quiet night out to dinner with just the two of us.

27 years...

My FB post..."Happy 27th Anniversary to my best friend and soulmate. Things have been kind of rough for me lately, and he has been my rock throughout all of it. I am so incredibly grateful to have him as my partner in crime as we navigate this crazy roller coaster of a life together. Cheers to 27 years!"

Gifts...

My gift to Doug...

I have been really wanting a recumbent stationary bike because with my heel issues right now, it is hard for me to walk on a treadmill. So, Doug got me a stationary bike for our anniversary (I haven't taken a picture of it yet, but here is an idea)...

Us heading to our anniversary dinner that evening...

We had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants...

We dined on filets, crab cakes and two desserts - berry cobbler and chocolate mousse...

Us...

We always know around our anniversary that the Kentucky Derby will be on. On that Saturday night, we watched the last race...

It was very cool to see a photo finish this year. Just crazy!

(Swiped this shot off the internet)...

And for Cinco de Mayo, my friend Amy and her daughter Mary invited Doug, Bri and me to join them for a very yummy Mexican meal...

A perfect afternoon of food and friends!!

**********************

Then Mother's Day rolled around. I met my mom and sister for an early ladies lunch on Friday to celebrate and exchange gifts...

And on actual Mother's Day, I just wanted to take it easy. Doug and Bri gave me breakfast in bed and some lovely gifts including these Lego flowers...

Briana obliged me with a quick photo opp...

For dinner, we went to one of my favorite Italian restaurants...

We dined on wedding soup, corn chowder (not pictured), chicken marsala, roasted duck, shrimp risotto, tiramisu and chocolate lava cake...

It was a very nice Mother's Day.

 *************************

Scattered amongst all the celebrations of May (including graduation related events that I haven't blogged about yet), I am still dealing with a lot of health related things. Doctors visits, tests, procedures - it's all very overwhelming. I turned 50 and fell apart - that's how I feel. I am very blessed that I have been still able to enjoy all these nice moments in my life, but there are other moments that I feel really down, tired, sick and anxious. I am trying desperately to fix myself and find answers, but it's taking a long time. And I'm not sure I can ever get back to what I was - which wasn't close to perfect in the first place.

So continue to keep me in your thoughts and prayers if you don't mind. I'm still on the struggle bus and I'm ready to get off of it very soon - if I can.

Briana graduates on Thursday evening - and I pray it doesn't rain because it is an outside graduation (don't get me started on that - talk about added stress). I will be back soon to blog all about the end of school and Briana's graduation.
