My beautiful girl and her classmates had their kindergarten graduation ceremony this morning. It was the cutest thing ever. Briana looked beautiful. I will do a post on all the festivities in my next post, but for now, I just want to say how proud I am of her! She is ready for first grade! :D

1200 Posts
This is my 1200th post written on "Life With Briana." I honestly can't believe it. I was a girl that really didn't even want to start a blog back in 2006, but I was talked into it. In the China adoption community as far as blogging goes, I am one of the last few bloggers standing with the same blog that I originally started with. I'm not one of the most popular blogs out there (but I hold my own), and I am fine with that. I'd rather have a fair amount faithful followers that really care about what is going on in my life than hundreds of people that just pop in once in a while.
This blog was a lifeline for me while I was enduring the long adoption wait. A long wait that started after I had already tried for 4 years to become a mom. Now it has become a lifeline for me as I twist and turn through the winding roads of motherhood. I have to say I miss those beginning days a bit. Getting to peek into the lives of some wonderful people that I would have never met if it had not been for the blogosphere. A number of my bloggy friends moved over to Facebook, some started other types of blogs that focus on other interests, and others have dropped off the radar completely. I am grateful for F@cebook because I am able to stay connected with a number of my bloggy friends there, but for me, it isn't really the same as blogging.
I want to thank my faithful followers for following my life and watching my
beautiful girl change from this baby...
Into this amazing little girl...
I probably won't be around for another 1200 posts. It took me almost six years to get to this place. But I do plan to stay around a bit longer. As Bri gets older and her life gets more complex, I will need more of her input as to how much of her life she wants me to continue to share with the world.
This blog has been a scrapbook of Briana's entire life from age 1 to age (almost) 6. She will know just about everything she did and said during that time. When she is old enough to read all of this one day, I hope she finds it amusing and enjoyable.
Thank you for following "Life With Briana" for 1200 posts.
Swinging
Briana just loves to swing. I brought her to our neighborhood playground the other day for some swing time.
I really need to get her a swing set for our backyard.
Sight Words Completed
At the beginning of the school year, my gal brought home a full sheet of paper with 31 lists of words to be learned over the course of the school year. Each list contained 7 to 10 words. I wasn't sure Briana could do it. It really was a daunting task. She was barely reading anything when school started. Week by week, she and I worked through the lists. Some weeks were awesome and easy. Others were tougher - especially when Bri wasn't in the mood to learn her words. I would highlight each list when she recited them to her teacher, and then her teacher would punch her green card.
Yesterday, she completed her last two lists! I'm so proud of her!!!!
She received a medal for her hard work and she got her name placed inside the paper gumball machine that is hung up on the wall in kindergarten hall at school.
It was a very happy day!

My Little Artist
The Friday before Mother's Day, Doug took Briana over to the Art Station near our house so she could make a Mother's Day craft for me. The Art Station took these pictures of Doug and Bri.
It was very sweet of Doug to take off work early to take her over there, and I love seeing Briana so hard at work!

I'm Trying To Be Nicer Mama (The Rough Patch)
See that face? Yes, I was able to capture it. The face that I had been getting from Miss B over the last few weeks. Anytime she got ticked at mama - that's the face I got. When I corrected her (like during homework). When she didn't like something I said. When I annoyed her.
That is the face.
A couple of weeks before Doug and I left for Napa, Briana started getting a bit more huffy with me (and bit more huffy with Doug too). Working on homework was getting tougher. She was getting mad at me when I helped her read. She got on "yellow" at school for the first time ever the day before we left for Napa - that means she had to move her star on the behavior chart twice (which means she got reprimanded twice for not listening). I thought she was maybe upset because we were leaving town. She was of course an angel with my parents. And when we got home, I hoped the huffiness would end. But it didn't. It was still there.
She is not the type of kid to say no to us. But it started happening. For example, I wanted to go out on Mother's Day and she complained that she didn't want to go out. At soccer practice (before we left town), she got angry with Doug when he started kicking the ball around with one of her teammates. Jealousy reared its ugly head. And she even huffed at her soccer coach and refused to kick the ball (over something I can't remember now). Doug and I got on her for all of that.
Every morning when I would wake her up for school, she would be super cranky and kind of unfriendly to me. During field day, I tried to correct her during one of the games because she was doing something incorrectly and "the face" (see above) was the face I got from her after that. She huffed me during the spring fling too when I was trying to help (verbally) steer her the right way during a ride on game. Doug and I had gotten back from Napa the night before but we dragged ourselves to the spring fling because she wanted to go so badly - which she knew. And over the course of a few weeks, when I picked her up from school, she would see me and hide her face behind her pickup ticket as she approached my car. When my parents picked her up from school, it was like she was getting picked up by rock stars - she was so excited. Me - not so much.

Now I know that I am boring and old hat, and believe me, I don't need applause or excitement when she gets in my car after school. But, I also don't need her hiding her face from me either. I don't know where all the attitude was coming from, but all I knew was I was getting tired of it. I know Briana is only five and she may have been upset, but I also know I am her mother, I make the rules and I can't let her talk back to me (or others). I had been letting her get away with the huffiness long enough. I would reprimand her, but not harsh enough I guess because it was still happening way too often.
When she and I got home after field day, I told her she needed to take a shower. I had been at field day with her for 4 hours. She had given me "the face" while I was there. She had gotten a bloody lip that needed treatment. I was tired. She was tired.
I started to take the ponytail holder out of her hair so I could comb all the knots out of it (this child has the knottiest hair). I tried to be careful, but it got a little stuck and it hurt her a bit when it came out. And she got mad. She started huffing at me and whining at me again and I was done. I don't like it when I yell, but I admit that I did. I told her how she had been acting lately and that she needed to cut it out now. I told her she had been sassing me and huffing at me for weeks, that I didn't know why and I really didn't appreciate it.
She started to cry and I put her in the shower. She cried on and off until she got out of the shower. I dried her hair and told her to go to her room. I went to check on her about 10 minutes later and she had locked her door. Oh yes she did. She knows she is not supposed to do that. She had some stuffed animals taken away for that one.
I finally told her that she could come out of her room and go in her playroom. Then I went downstairs and sat on the couch to watch TV and calm down. I heard her upstairs moving around and doing something. She was up there for a long time. She came downstairs, sat next to me and handed me this...
I started to cry and thanked her for making it for me. It was her olive branch. I knew my sweet girl was still in there somewhere. She said she was sorry and told me she was going to try to be
nicer to me.
nicer to me.
And over the last few days, she has been so much better. Sweet, loving and no huffing. She even reminds me that she is trying to be nicer. And in return, I told her that I am going to try not to let my temper flair so quickly (which I tend to do sometimes) and that I would be nice too.
Every relationship has rough patches. I guess this was hers and mine. She hasn't been horrible (she really is a good girl), but she certainly had some shaping up to do.

I'm sure this rough patch will be mild in comparison to what will happen during her teen years. Please start praying for me now.
Just One More Week
Just one more week until school is out! We are almost to the kindergarten finish line!
Woo HOO!!!!!
We are almost there!!!!!

Very First Field Day (Kindergarten)
Briana's very first Field Day took place at school yesterday. I took her to school and stayed to watch the festivities. It was misty outside and a bit cool. And that was a good thing because it would have been horrible if it had been 90+ outside.
Here are Bri and her friend K waiting to head to the first activity...
Heading out...
The kids started with the bean bag toss (see first pic) but then headed into the gym for a few fun activities...
Tire roll...
Frisbee race...
Then they hit the water games. Those were the biggest hit of all...
Catch the wet sponge...
Popsicle break...
Musical chairs. Except instead of taking a chair away, wet sponges were put on the chairs so they would get wet...
Pass the water cup...
Then came tug of war. Unfortunately, during the first tug, Briana got headbutted in the face by a classmate and her lip started to bleed. I took her to the bathroom to clean up. I was worried that would be her only chance to tug, but they got a few more times...
Sadly, her class kept losing. But Briana and K decided to dance their cares away...
Then it was just a girl tug...
Watching the middle...
Bri's side won. Woohoo! Big excitement...
Then it was the boys turn and they won too. More big excitement...
Happy Briana and her friend "I".
After 4 long hours of field day, the kids were still smiling. It was fun. There were no ribbons or keeping score or anything - it was just the fun of doing the activities. I have to say 4 hours was a bit too long for me, but I wouldn't have missed her first field day for the world.
