66 Weeks Behind Us (Weekly and Final Update)

 66.

66 weeks behind us since the pandemic hit the state of Georgia full force. My final weekly update.

15 months of living my life drastically different from how I lived it before. It's been tough (and it's been even tougher on a lot of other people) but I have no regrets regarding my choices.

As I write this, 602K people have died in the US from Cov!d-19 since the beginning of last year...

If you lost a friend or family member to this horrible virus, my heart truly goes out to you. So many things could have been done differently and should have been done differently in this nation.

************************

Moving on to more positive things...

Let me talk all about everything that went on in my world last week and this past Sunday (lots of happy stuff!)...

Bri and I tried a new peanut butter and chocolate brownie recipe that she found on the internet. I wasn't too sure about how it would turn out, but it came out super yummy...

B already found another recipe for some Oreo cookie concoction she wants to try to make and I told her we needed to slow down a little. I'm already suffering from some pandemic weight gain. Baking all these sweets isn't going to help my situation. Heh.

Bri and I also checked out our neighborhood pool...

We didn't go to our neighborhood pool last year due to Cov!d, so we hadn't been to the pool since the summer of 2019. We had the pool to ourselves for about 20 minutes and then families started coming in - which was fine. It was a really warm day, so it was perfect for getting in the water and relaxing by the pool.

Bri and I had a movie afternoon (in our theater) and watched "Wish Dragon." It is a Chinese take on the story of "Aladdin." It was super cute and we really enjoyed it...

My furry girl is as clingy as ever...

She is really clingy with all of us, but she is super clingy to me - I think because I am her main food source. Heh. I had to run an errand last week and Doug took the photo of her watching me drive away. My cat does this. No joke. LOL!

Friday was the day that started our family's "celebration" weekend. The weekend consisted of my birthday and Father's Day. Another cause for celebration was that Bri officially hit the two week mark after her second vaccine which makes her now "fully vaccinated"...

A great day indeed!

My parents came over on Friday to celebrate my birthday and Father's Day a bit early...

It was such a nice morning/afternoon.

Saturday was my actual birthday. I turned 48 years old and I had never even heard of "Juneteenth" until two years ago (but I won't go into the fact that there is so much history I never was taught.) Now my birthday falls on a federal holiday - crazy! So happy Juneteenth everyone!

For my birthday, we watched "In The Heights" in the afternoon...

I know there is a bit of controversy surrounding it (which I get), but I thought it was a great movie. Very entertaining. It definitely gave me some "Miami feels" (even though the movie is located in NY). I definitely had a feeling of nostalgia for my first home.

Also on my birthday, I got breakfast in bed, a delicious cake and a night out to one of my favorite restaurants...

And I received so many wonderful gifts from family and friends...

Briana painted the beautiful pot for me - and it took her several days. She needed several coats of paint to create the orange-y/peachy color for the pot. Then she did some outlining in gold and painted on blueberries. Doug helped her order a blueberry plant. She did such an amazing job.

I may have mentioned a few times that I love the show "Sch!tt's Creek." Heh. People also seem to somehow know I love cats and drinking wine. LOL!

Thanks to everyone who gave me gifts, sent me cards and texts, wrote me FB messages and bought me meals. It all made my birthday very special.

Sunday rolled around and it was Father's Day. I made Doug a yummy egg/sausage/cheese skillet for breakfast, he opened cards and gifts and then he watched soccer in the afternoon. Then D, B and I headed to our favorite Cuban restaurant "Papi's" for dinner...

Papi's is the first restaurant we've eaten at since the pandemic started in which we didn't make a reservation first. When we arrived, we noticed there were still clear partitions between booths and the servers were still wearing masks - which was nice. The food was so delicious! We really had missed eating there.

We really had a great week. One of the busiest weeks we have had in a very long time. Our summer ahead looks quite busy, which is how our summers used to be. Last year was just so different. I like having a good mix of busy and not so busy during the summertime.

 **************************

Instead of focusing on the negative worldly stuff in this last "weekly" post, I am going to post some positive things I've been observing...

A much nicer, more caring, healthier, less toxic Wh!te House in the U.S...

A renewed relationship with our allies...

A tougher stance against tyrants and dictators...

A pandemic that is beginning to dissipate due to belief in science and vaccines...

"Normal" life slowly starting to come back again...

People speaking out loudly and proudly about the importance of diversity (race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, generational)...

And there is a lot more I could list. In my opinion, things are slowly headed in the right direction. I have some hope again.

*************************

I saw this picture on social media the other day and it really spoke to me...

This is very true.

As I said in my last post, I need to start focusing on being happy. Trying to figure out what makes me happy and who makes me happy...

This last quote really spoke to me. Life can be pretty difficult. I've had my share of difficult. I'm still feeling quite a bit of anxiety, anger, resentment and trauma at the moment. I'm trying to work on that. I still deal with chronic health issues. I worry about my Chinese-American daughter living in this post-pandemic America. But, I have to try to start living my life in a more normal way even though I am a bit wary about it. I need to have faith that these vaccines are as protective as the experts are claiming. I have been waiting for a very long time for things in life to get "less difficult" and it's not really happening. Every time I turn around, there seems to be something else smacking me in the face. I'm not sure life will get any easier anytime soon.

So, I have to figure out how to be happy even though life is just plain hard. I have to focus on my present and future more than my past. I am going to focus on time with my daughter and husband - who both make me so happy. I have to continue to set boundaries. I have to try to focus on my happy moments. Hopefully, that will bring me the overall happiness and peace I am searching for. And it may not happen quickly, but I hope with some more work on myself, I'll finally get there. Fingers and toes crossed.

I think stepping away from this blog and social media at this time (just for a little while) will be good for me. A good start for me to find my happy again.

************************

So that is it. My last weekly update. Thank you to all of you who read all of my posts through the pandemic. Thank you to those who supported me and who are on the "same page" as I am about so many issues. Writing every week has been very cathartic and really helped me get through this tough time. I may have lost some readers due to expressing my views, but so be it - it's my blog, my space, my feelings and my passion. It helped me process everything that's been going on around me.

I think after 66 weeks of faithfully updating, I think I've earned a bit of a respite. I won't be gone forever, just a few weeks.

Thanks again everyone.

See ya on the flip side.

65 Weeks Behind Us (Weekly Update)

Wow. 65 weeks behind us. I cannot believe this is my 2nd to the last post of "counting the weeks" of the pandemic. I cannot believe it's been over a year since the world turned upside down. At the same time, it feels like I have been on a very long, arduous, grueling journey. I wasn't sure if this pandemic would ever finally "end" for us.

The pandemic isn't over for a lot of people, but with my family being vaccinated now, it's close to being over for us. I have more plans ahead of me than I thought I would have this summer. My calendar has been close to empty for over a year. My family was doing our part and that required some sacrifice. I don't regret one thing. I seriously don't. And even though I am slowly and carefully starting to spread my wings again now, this pandemic has drastically changed me forever. I don't see a lot of things and/or people the same way, and I need to figure out how to move forward with the new "metaphorical" glasses I am wearing. I could say that I am sad about it (and I am a bit), but maybe it was best that I was pushed to put these glasses on. True colors have been shown and it's better that I see things more clearly now.

*************************

I drove Briana over to her friend Mere's house Friday afternoon and I snapped this picture of her in the car. She just looked so grown up to me. She's definitely a young woman now. I miss my little girl, but I am enjoying my time with my teen. We are already two weeks into summer break and I feel like time is flying by. Our summer breaks are always quite short being only 9 weeks long. It's worth it in the end when Bri gets a lot of breaks throughout the year, but August comes way too quickly and it's a bit painful to get through at first. But with Bri missing out of a normal year of high school, it's time for her to get back to life again.

I'm honestly nervous for her. D and I are not feeling great about the school that she will be attending come August (academically it's quite good, but it's other stuff as most of you know), but it's her decision. We are respecting her wishes (and we will see what happens). I hope the school can somehow earn my respect back. It's been a really rough go so far. Time will tell.

***************************

Since Bri is still completing her vaccination cycle (just one more week to go - woot!), we are still laying low for now.

Last week...

Our family watched the new "Loki" premiere and it was really good...

Bri and I spent an afternoon going through her closet and drawers purging clothes that are too small or too young for her now (we will be donating everything)...

We also cleared out a lot of costume jewelry. Shockingly, she still has a lot of clothes and jewelry after all that.

I baked her some cookies to kick off her summer...

She's been drawing quite a bit. This is her latest digital drawing (Cafe Girl)...

And she likes to paint her phone cases (creating her own designs)...

I thought about checking out the swimming pool with Bri (we never went to our neighborhood pool last year), but the weather has not been behaving. There was a lot of high humidity and many pop-up rain showers throughout the week...

I hope we get some better, sunnier days this week.

And on Thursday, I got my hair done by my NEW hairdresser. It was a much more relaxed and comfortable experience. I'm really happy with my hair and I am kicking myself for staying in a "contentious" relationship with my former hairdresser for way too long. Sometimes you just need a push to make a change...

*************************

Instead of going into a big discussion on the virus, politics, etc, I am going to just post some headlines and memes that spoke to me last week...

The last one I posted is very true for me right now. The opinions, misinformation, preaching, anger, jabs, bragging, boasting, etc all over social media and on television are becoming a bit too much for me. I really am burned out. I'm not locking myself away forever - I just need a big break. Get away from all of it. Once I get through my 66th weekly update post and my birthday festivities, I will be taking a little time off from my blog and social media. I need a bit of a cleansing. I always worry about all the "good" stuff I'll miss when I leave for a while, but hopefully I can catch up on it all when I get back on.

I'm going to use that time to try to find my happy again. The last several years for me have been trying to say the least. Dealing with a bunch of uncomfortable physical chronic ailments. Losing one of my best friends suddenly. Enduring a pandemic that not only divided our nation but divided my friend base as well. I need to find my peace and happiness again...

So, I'll be back next week. Last but not least...

64 Weeks Behind Us (Weekly Update)

 64.

64 weeks behind us since coronavirus hit the state of GA full force.

This is my third to the last "weekly" post. I'll obviously keep posting here, but I just won't continue to count the weeks. Bri's vaccination cycle will be fully complete on June 18th. My birthday is June 19th. I honestly cannot think of a better birthday present that I could receive this year. #believeinscience #yesvaccinesaresafe #pleasegetvaccinated #microchipsarenotinvaccines

Briana received her second shot on Friday...

So far, so good. Just a little loss in appetite and a sore arm, but other than that, she is feeling pretty good.

***************************

Last week was a week. I started off the week (over Memorial Day weekend) with a weird stomach thing that lasted a couple of days. Then a very good friend of mine lost a family member suddenly. Not the happiest way to start off summer break, but I hope things will start looking up a bit more soon.

D, B and I really tried to kick off our summer break in a good way with an overnight stay at the R!tz Carlton in Atlanta - Sunday into Monday. It was our first hotel stay as a family since the pandemic started (Doug did have a short business trip a few weeks ago that required him to stay in a hotel). Hotel workers are still wearing masks at the R!tz, which was nice.

We were looking forward to some yummy room service and a fun movie. Just chilling...

We checked in around 3 or so to our suite. Doug and I were going to be in the bedroom and Bri would sleep on a pullout couch in the living area.

Doug and I were watching TV in the bedroom and Bri came into our room about an hour after check in saying the next door neighbors were kind of being loud (and she heard some cussing). We all went in the living area to listen (there was an locked adjoining door between our rooms). I believe their room was just a regular bedroom room. Yes, they were talking pretty loud but we hoped they would stop when nighttime came around.

They must have gone out to dinner or something because when our room service arrived, it was all quiet for a few hours. (and we ate in that living area).

We all decided to watch a movie in the bedroom and got done with that around 10PM. Bri then wanted to get ready for bed. She goes back into her room and returns saying things are really bad next door.

The neighbors had returned. Not only were they loud, they were vulgar. Saying some really provocative things. I tried talking loud enough to let them know that we could hear each other, but that didn't phase them in the least. They could have been drunk - who knows. Let's just say, the woman (who was the loudest) was saying suggestive things that I didn't need my 14 year old teen overhearing. Honestly, it's not behavior that I'd ever think I would encounter at a R!tz.

Doug immediately jumped on the phone and asked for another room and explained the situation. After a few minutes, the front desk said they had our exact type of room a few floors up. We grabbed our stuff (luckily we didn't have much) and went up 4 floors. We actually had a better view of everything from the higher floor.

So, with that hiccup and with me starting to not feel well even before the dinner even arrived (I was able to eat a bit at that time though I wasn't feeling perfect), it wasn't the best experience overall. It wasn't all bad, but it was tainted for sure.

On a positive note, the food was really good (I sadly didn't get a fancy breakfast - just a bagel)...

And the staff at the R!tz could not have been nicer. Every person was friendly and super accommodating. It's just a shame we encounter people way too often behaving badly though. Sadly, it's just the (self-centered) world we live in today.

***************************

I only have a couple of these "weekly updates" left to post, so I am going to continue with voicing my opinion a bit in these.

When the notice about the "removal of masks" for vaccinated people came from the CDC several weeks ago, I admit I was happy - just like everyone else. But at the same time, I was hesitant about it. It seemed a bit rushed. Briana had just received her first vaccination and younger children weren't  (and still aren't) even eligible for vaccines.

I received an e-mail not long after that from a nearby store that I frequent (one of the few that were truly enforcing the mask use rule during the pandemic)...

The thing is...during the pandemic in my neck of the woods, mask use was "supposedly" encouraged in places, but it really wasn't for the most part. Lots of people were not masking. I would see some people masking up before going into stores that required them, but overall it wasn't really an important "thing" around here - which is why I didn't go out very much during the pandemic. When you saw unmasked people verses masked people here, you pretty much knew where everyone stood politically.

To me, removal of the masks really blurs the lines now. You just don't know who is who.

I kind of laugh when I hear F@uci say unvaccinated kids should wear masks in school in the fall. So many kids weren't wearing masks during the height of the pandemic here - at least in the public schools. It's like we are on two different planets.

This is why I am waiting a bit to start ditching the mask until Briana's vaccination is complete. I have no idea when I enter a store or restaurant if someone is vaccinated or not. We are continuing to be extra careful for now. Just two more weeks. Better safe than sorry.

**************************

Check this out...this was a status update from a local BBQ restaurant (that I now used to eat at every once in a while but no more)...

This was posted on a business FB page. No joke. My mouth fell open after reading it. It is probably one of the most unprofessional things I have read on a business page. You can tell immediately where this place falls politically and where they get their news from.

I get that people are wearing out and that a lot of places are struggling due to being understaffed, but this should have NEVER have been posted on a business page. People have the right to rant and rave all over their personal pages, but this was just crazy to me. And obviously, this restaurant got reamed in the comments by a lot of people for it. This was one of the comments...

Then, the restaurant tried to backpedal a little in a separate status update to defend themselves.

But THIS is an outspoken "screw-you" attitude from a lot of people around here.

And just know, I know someone who ordered takeout from this joint not too long ago and literally half the order was missing when they got home. So, they had to complain. What were they supposed to do? Not say anything?

***************************

Politically, I am still just sickened by so much...

It's horrifying that an insurrection commission to investigate Jan 6th was struck down. It sickens me that Republ!cans all over the country are making more difficult for people to vote.

What worries me right now...Tr@mp is going around telling people that he is still pres!dent and that he will be reinstated this summer. It isn't even close to true. It will never happen. Our political system doesn't even work like that. Misinformation like this can be dangerous - we've already witnessed that.

It's scary. It's madness. It's overwhelming.

It really is.

Let me end on this sad, insane note...

I wish I was making this up. This woman somehow got elected. There are just no words.

*****************************

So, that is all I have to say for now. Last week was kind of rough, but hopefully this week, Bri and I can have some summer fun (safely). Be back next week.
