Rain Or Shine

Since my last post was a bit of a downer, I'll start with the "Shine" part of this post. Briana and I headed to our neighborhood swimming pool for the first time this morning and it was beautiful and sunny outside. We stayed for almost two hours, and Briana finally told she was ready to go home and have lunch. The above picture is Briana resting right before we headed home. She sat back, put her hands behind her head and said, "Ahhh." I guess we do live a pretty charmed life. :)

This is her new swimsuit. It is so cute! It also has a flotation vest that attaches to it.

Here was our pool today...

And now for the "Rain" part of the post...we have been getting rain a lot in the afternoons here in GA. This is something that has not happened in years due to the drought. It was lightly raining a few days ago, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity for Briana to put on her new yellow rain boots (that she got as a gift for our 2nd referral anniversary on Saturday) and play with an old umbrella of mine.

I just love rainy afternoons...

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday!

Sense Of Entitlement

This post is a little bit of a rant I guess. I don't often do this. I overheard a conversation today that really bothered me. I wasn't trying to overhear it, it was very loud and in a public place, so there wasn't a way I couldn't hear it. I don't know why I am surprised by the conversation, so much of the world today feels like they are owed something.

There was a man talking to a woman. It was obvious that did not know each other before today, but the man and woman started up a casual conversation where the man revealed to the woman that his two little girls were adopted by him and his wife through the foster care system. The woman was fascinated by this and told the man that she had always wanted to adopt a child. She had a biological child and was pregnant with her second child (4 months along) but she really wanted to adopt too. She also said she had thought about fostering a child but was kind of scared by it because she might get too attached to a child that she might have to give back. She asked him if he had any contact information on fostering a child.

That part of the conversation was fine.

She then said that she would really like to bring a foster child into her home before her baby was born (remember, two seconds before that she said she wasn't even sure she wanted to be foster parent). The man was surprised a little and informed her that there were a lot of things that needed to be done before she could even be considered for the foster care program. It would probably be 12 months or more before a child could be placed in her home. There are background checks, medicals, classes, etc. Makes sense, right? I mean, most of the people reading this blog completely understand what you have to go through to adopt/foster a child. This woman was floored by this revelation. She complained that she was a pediatric nurse and her husband was a neurosurgeon and they were good people. Then she said, "Do my husband and I both have to take the classes?" The man of course said yes - if you are married then you both need to take the classes. The woman scoffed again and said that her husband didn't have time to take classes. Wow...

For some reason, this woman felt she should be able to just foster a child with no questions asked. She didn't feel that she nor her husband needed to be taught anything about how to parent a foster child. Children coming from broken homes are special. They will most likely need special attention - physically and emotionally. I could feel the ignorance exuding from this woman. And her sense of entitlement absolutely astounded me. She was basically saying, "I want a child so just give me one." There is no doubt that this woman has no business adopting or fostering anybody. If someone is serious about fostering a child, he/she needs to MAKE the time to take the classes. And if you don't have time for the classes, how are you going to have time to raise another kid?

No one handed me Briana. I had to prove that I was worthy to parent a child. I didn't mind proving it. (Now keep in mind, I didn't like having to re-prove it over and over when the wait got so long, but I didn't mind having to prove it.)

In my opinion, she acted like fostering a child was like picking out a purse from the mall. Just pick it out and take it home.

This world is filled with so many people that feel they are owed something. So many people live beyond their means nowadays for instant gratification. When are people going to realize that the reward is so much greater when you have to work for it?

Referral Day Anniversary

Two years ago today, we saw our beautiful little baby girl for the first time. It was a dream come true. We hopped on a plane six weeks later to go to China to bring her home. Since then, she has brought more joy, laughs, happiness and sunshine to our lives than we could have ever imagined. Happy Referral Anniversary baby girl.

New Sport and/or Activity

Briana is still loving gymnastics and now she has moved up a level. I'm trying to figure out something else to add to Briana's schedule this summer or fall. She will be starting preschool in August two days a week in the mornings, and I think she is going to love it (fingers crossed). I am trying out a dance camp this summer - just four days in July - but it will give me a taste as to whether or not Briana will enjoy dance classes. I'm considering putting her in one more activity besides gymnastics to keep her busy this summer/fall. I don't want to put her into too many activities because I still want to have my mommy/Briana time.

I went to a nearby park with Angela and Laney & Amy and Mary a couple of weeks ago. There was a baseball field and a playground, and I brought a few balls for the girls to kick around. I was pretty impressed with how good Briana was at kicking the ball. Maybe I have a future soccer player???

The girls loved running around the bases. Maybe I have a softball star???

I don't have a swim star just yet. I took Briana to a free swim class at a nearby swim school. I was less than impressed with them. Briana got about 5 minutes of attention in a 30 minute lesson. Briana hates getting water in her eyes and she doesn't want to stick her head in the water because of that. I think I need to buy her some little goggles. I am considering possible private swim lessons for her future - if I can get her head under water.

Well, I know I definitely have an eating star. After the lesson, Doug, Bri and I went to a little diner for lunch. Bri was so hungry. When this girl is hungry, watch out. I am glad I still have my fingers.

Well, I am not in a major rush to find another activity. I'm just mulling it over. I'll see how she does at dance camp. And I am sure we will be spending lots of time at the swimming pool. It is getting so hot in GA now, I know we are going to need to cool off! Happy Summer everyone!

Back To Story Time

It is HOT in Georgia - 90 degrees hot. So, this was the summer look Briana was sporting on her way to story time this morning. Did I say "story time"? Well, yes I did. It has been almost two months since our last (horrible) visit to story time. Story time started back up for the summer, so I asked Bri if she wanted to check it out today and she said yes. And she had a great time. She danced, she listened to the stories, she did the craft...she enjoyed it all. We will try it again next week, but as soon as she gets tired of it again, we will find something else to do.

Bri and I started going to story time at the library in June of last year. I just looked back at my blog and found these pictures in my post about story time in July 2008. Briana has certainly grown from last summer to this one!

Briana Loves Her Friends

Briana loves her friends! Last Friday, Kathy and Chani and Lisa and Maisie came over to my house for a play date (and some girl chit chat) and when Briana saw everyone coming up to the door that morning, she started squealing with delight! It was so fun watching Maisie, Briana and Chani play and interact with each other. They are all growing up so fast. Sigh...

Maisie and Briana decided to have a tickle fight.

And Chani was smart enough to stay out of it. :)

The girls started playing with stickers.

And somehow Maisie ended up looking like this. It only took a few minutes for Lisa and I to peel about 50 stickers from Maisie's body. LOL!

And the Friday before Memorial Day, Doug, Briana and I (and Doug's friend Khalid who was visiting us for the weekend) joined Amy, David and Emily Grace at B@hama Breeze for dinner, drinks and good music. It is always fun to get together with them and the girls LOVE dancing together. Emily Grace is having a very good effect on Briana. Briana was actually starting to dance rather than just jump and hop to the music.

The girls started the night off like this...

but ended up like this.

I'm thinking they started partying a little too hard. ;)

And Doug's friend Khalid stayed at our house for a few days over Memorial Day weekend. I was a little nervous that Briana would be nervous around him. Well, that wasn't a problem at all. I swear she remembered him staying with us last year because within five minutes of him walking in our door, she was having him play puzzles with her.

And wrestling with him.

Of course, Briana joined in on their brainstorming work sessions. She really has all the good ideas, you know.

Doug, Briana and I are really blessed by having such good friends.

Lazy Sunday

Don't you just love lazy Sundays? The ones where you read the "newspaper" in the morning (this is what Briana was calling her workbook today).

Then go to see a movie (and actually make it through the entire thing - yeehaw!). We saw "Up" in 3D and it was terrific.

Then head home and take a nap with Daddy and kitty...

Sounds like a perfect day to me.

Conversations With Briana

Ya'll remember when I was worried about Briana speech? Well, I'm not anymore. Once she started getting the hang of the talking thing, she got it really quickly. What is so cool is that we can have actual conversations now...

When Briana and I are in the car, she is a backseat driver. She often says, "Mommy slow down, you are going to fast." Now I hope she remembers this advice when she turns 16 and starts driving on her own. She also directs me where to go by pointing and saying, "Shish way mama."

Doug told Briana that my birthday was coming up soon - in a few weeks. Bri is still not getting the whole time/date thing yet. She looked at the pretend watch on her arm and said, "Ten minutes?" Now she is all about me having a birthday party. She askes me every day - at least 3 or 4 times a day, "Can I come to your birfday party?" and "I wanna come to your party, can I come?" I'm not having a party, but I think me opening some gifts and blowing candles out on a cake is party enough for Bri. She has told me she is going to get me two yellow balloons, a birfday cake, flowers and a card.

On Wednesday afternoon, I told Briana that I wasn't feeling very well. She said, "I make you feel better mama." She made me sit in a folding chair in my office. Then she said, "I get you comfy pillow." She put a huge pillow from my bed behind my head. Then she said, "I get you comfy blanket." She ran and got a blanket. Then she pulled out another pillow for my legs. Then she said as she pointed up her finger to me, "I get you juice - I be right back." She brought me a drum as my juice cup. "Now I get you bandage." She brought me a train track as my "bandage". Then she gave me a few stuffed animals too so I would feel better.

Doug came home and found me like this...

I still didn't feel all that well physically after this, but Miss Bri certainly made my heart swell and put a smile on my face. The best part was the kiss I got at the end after she said, "I kiss you - you feel better."

That's my girl...
